EVALUATION OF MULTILINGUAL TEXT ALIGNMENT SYSTEMS
   
ARCADE est un projet financé par l'AUPELF-UREF dans le cadre des Actions de Recherches Concertées "Ingénierie de la Langue", qui a pour but l'évaluation de systèmes d'alignement de textes parallèles multilingues. ARCADE is a project financed by AUPELF-UREF in the framework of the "Language Engineering" concerted research actions, whose goal is the evaluation of multilingual parallel text alignment systems.
   
La première campagne (1996-1997) portait sur l'alignement phrase à phrase. Cette campagne vient de s'achever et un rapport de synthèse résume les discussions méthodologiques qui ont eu lieu au sein du comité de réflexion, et décrit les résultats de l'évaluation de six systèmes d'alignement de phrases français-anglais: The first campaign(1996-1997) was focused on sentence-level alignment. It just ended and a final report summarises the methodological discussions within the scientific committee, and describes the results of the evaluation of six French-English sentence aligners:

Le présent appel vous invite à participer à la deuxième campagne (1998-1999). La participation se fera dans deux catégories The present call invites you to participate to the second campaign (1998-1999). Participation will be possible under two categories:
   
  • alignement de phrases
  • sentence alignment
  • alignement de mots et termes
  • word and term alignment
   
(un même système pourra bien sûr concourir dans les deux catégories). (systems can of course compete in both categories).
   
Cette deuxième campagne se déroulera en plusieurs étapes, dont la première sera menée conjointement avec l'action SENSEVAL de désambiguïsation du sens des mots, parrainée par l'ACL-SIGLEX et EURALEX, et plus particulièrement le sous-groupe orienté vers les langues romanes, ROMANSEVAL: This second campaign will take place in several phases. The first one will be organised in parallel with the SENSEVAL word sense disambiguation exercise sponsored by ACL-SIGLEX and EURALEX, and more particularly the subgroup of SENSEVAL for romance languages, ROMANSEVAL:

Les résultats de cette première étape seront présentés lors d'une session spéciale lors du colloque SENSEVAL qui aura lieu du 2 au 4 septembre 1998 à Herstmonceux Castle, Sussex (Royaume Uni). The results of this first phase will be presented at a special session during the SENSEVAL workshop to be held from 2-4 September 1998 in Hestmonceux Castle, Susses (United Kingdom).
   

Compétition dans la catégorie phrases

Sentence category competition
    Un corpus bilingue (français-anglais) de près de trois millions de mots sera fourni aux participants par l'intermédiaire de l'ELRA au prix de 45 ECU. Les participants devront appliquer leur système sur ce corpus et renvoyer leurs résultats au coordinateur sous forme de liens entre numéros de phrases appariées.
    A bilingual corpus (English-French) of ca. three million words will be distributed to the participants though ELRA at a price of 45 ECU. Participants will run their system on this corpus and send their results to the co-ordinator in the form of links between matched sentences.
   

Compétition dans la catégorie mots

Word category competition
Un sous-ensemble du corpus ci-dessus (2 millions de mots) sera fourni aux participants ainsi qu'une liste de 60 mots français (20 noms, 20 adjectifs, 20 verbes), apparaissant dans environ 3000 contextes. Les participants devront, à l'aide de leur système, détecter les 3000 traductions dans le texte cible, et renvoyer la liste de ces traductions ainsi que leur position au coordinateur. Les mots-tests seront les mêmes que ceux utilisés dans le groupe ROMANSEVAL, ce qui permettra une comparaison entre les deux tâches, étiquetage des sens dans un texte monolingue et repérage/alignement de traductions. A subset of the above corpus (2 million words) will be distributed to the participants along with a list of 60 French words (20 nouns, 20 adjectives, 20 verbs), appearing in around 3000 contexts. The participants will run their system to detect the 3000 corresponding translations in the target text, and they will send the list of translations along with their positions to the co-ordinator. The test words will be the same as those used in the ROMANSEVAL group, which will enable a comparison between the two tasks, sense tagging in a monolingual text and tranlation spotting/alignment.

Les participants ne peuvent se retirer en cours de compétition et s'engagent à accepter la publication des résultats. Participants cannot withdraw during the competition and accept the publication of the results.
