DescriptionThis is the 5th regular Workshop of the Marie-Curie Research-Training Network Sound2Sense (S2S), following the ones in York, Nijmegen, Naples, and Prague. It is held at the Laboratoire Parole & Langage (LPL) of the Université de Provence (UMR 6057 CNRS) in Aix-en-Provence, France. The workshop is meant to be a platform for interdisciplinary training and scientific exchange between the senior scientists and the fellows of the network. This time, the content of the workshop covers the field from the signal to the prosodic structure and meaning within a cross-linguistic scope. It puts special emphasis on the prosodic details in speech communication that contribute to convey intonational and prominence-related meanings, and that are relevant for the identification and parsing of words, or for the perceptual processing of the speech signal in general. This includes details in the alignment and shape of the F0 contours, in the duration structure of the segmental string, in the interplay of the acoustic cues to prominence, and in the gestures that accompany speech production. Moreover, the workshop addresses the semantics of intonation as well as methodologies to create, to edit, and to query speech databases for prosodic research. In connection with the latter, two hands-on activities are offered that show the participants how F0 curves can be stylized and resynthesized as well as extracted and modelled for statistical analyses. More detailed information on the program may be found below.

Venue & General Information
Laboratoire Parole & Langage (LPL), Université de Provence, 5 Avenue Pasteur, 13100 Aix-en-Provence, France (see map below)
- Internet: A small number of PC workstations will be available for those, who need internet access during the workshop breaks. Moreover, most of the hotels will have WIFI, and there are some restaurants/bistros with free WIFI access close to the workshop venue.
- Hands-on sessions: If you want to participate in the hands-on sessions, we kindly ask you to bring your own laptop (and small headphones, if you have); and don't forget to take your power adaptors with you! (for example, if you have a UK plug).
- Presentations and Posters: If you want to leave your laptop at home and to bring just your presentation (for the MTR and/or your talk in the first two days) on a USB key, a CD, etc., please save it in a PPT or PDF file format and embed all non-standard (e.g., phonetic) fonts. There will be no poster session for the fellows at this workshop. Instead, we will use the Wednesday morning – and most probably also part of Tuesday afternoon (see “research discussion” in the programme) – to have more informal and flexible group meetings. That is, we would like to bring together fellows and seniors in small groups with changing constellations to discuss the current research as well as the fellows’ future research plans and collaborations. In order to help us to set up the groups and a rough schedule that allows everyone to talk to everyone they want to, please follow the instructions that you have received recently by email, or download them here.

Arriving in Aix & MarseillePlease note:When coming from the airport (MRS) or the train station (i.e. Gare TGV), please keep in mind that many bus drivers don't accept notes larger than 20 Euro!
Arriving by Plane:The closest airport is Marseille-Provence (MRS, "Marignane"). In addition to Air France, KLM, Lufthansa, Ibiera, Czech Airlines, BA, TAP, etc., there are several low-cost airlines flying to Marseille-Provence, including Ryanair, Easyjet, and BMIbaby. Alternatively, you could fly to Nice (NCE) and take a train or a shuttle bus to Aix-en-Provence. Nice airport offers some further low-cost airlines (such as Jet2.com, Air Berlin, Brussels Airlines, Flybe, and Germanwings). Moreover, different from Marseille-Provence, many of the flights going to Nice arrive in the middle of the day, which can be an advantage, if you are looking for a connective flight. However, consider that it takes about another 2-2,5 hours to get to Aix-en-Provence from Nice airport.
After arriving at the Marseille-Provence airport (MRS), you can take the shuttle bus, which goes to Aix every 30 minutes, from 5:30 to 23:30 (i.e. every full and half hour) and at 00:15. It stops in front of Terminal 1, next to the taxi rank. If you arrive with a low-cost airline, you will get to the shuttle bus in the following way: leave the arrival building (MP2), turn right, and then walk straight for about 5 minutes to the taxi rank. If you come with Air France or KLM, you will arrive at Terminal 4. To get to the bus stop, you must keep to the left. Every other airline arrives at Terminal 1. So, the bus stop will be directly in front of you when you leave the arrival hall. Keep in mind that there are two adjacent stops for shuttle buses at Terminal 1, one for the bus to Aix, and one for the bus to Marseille. The bus to Aix ("Navette") is light blue, not white ot dark blue! You can buy the bus ticket directly at the driver for 7,80 Euro. If you prefer to take a taxi, a trip to Aix will be around 60-80 Euro. However, it is not considerably faster than the shuttle bus. The bus trip takes almost exactly 30 minutes.
After arriving at the Nice airport (NCE), you have the possibility to take either a shuttle bus or a train to Aix-en-Provence. The shuttle bus is more convinient, faster, and cheaper, but it goes just 3-4 times a day. Click here for the timetable of the shuttle bus. A trip with the shuttle bus will cost about 26 Euro, and like at the Marseille-Provence airport you can purchase the ticket directly at the driver. The bus leaves from Terminal 1. If you arrive at Terminal 2, there is a free shuttle to Terminal 1 approximately every 10 minutes. If you want to go by train, you will have to get to the train station (Gare SNCF St. Augustin) first. There is a frequent and fast bus connection between the airport and the train station (line 23), and the train from Nice St. Augustin to Aix Centre Ville goes quite often. The trip (via Marseille) usually takes 4 hours and is about 30 Euro. Click here to plan your trip.
Arriving by Train:If you come to Aix-en-Provence by train (TGV or SNCF), you will probably arrive at the AIX TGV station, which is a bit outside of Aix-en-Provence. From there, you can either take a taxi (keep to the left after leaving the terminal building on the first (!) floor), which is about 40 Euro. Or you can again take a shuttle bus. For the latter, you must go down to the ground level (there are elevators and stairs). The shuttle bus stops directly in front of the building. There are buses every 10-15 minutes. The trip to Aix takes 15 minutes. You can buy the ticket for 3,80 Euro directly at the bus driver.
Getting around in Aix-en-Provence:The easiest way to get from A to B in Aix-en-Provence is to take a bus. Aix has a well-developed bus transportation network with more than 20 lines, which usually go every 10-20 minutes. A single ride is 1,10 Euro. The ticket is valid for 1 hour. Within this interval, you can change the bus as many times as necessary. The central bus station is called Gare Routière (the shuttle buses from the airport and the TGV train station will arrive here as well). Moreover, all city-internal bus lines also stop at the main roundabout in the city centre ("La Rotonde"). Here, you will also find the tourist office, which offers free maps and bus time tables in a number of languages (see above link to "Sightseeing"). The map below shows, how you can get from the Gare Routière to the main roundabout La Rotonde and (further) to the workshop venue (distance Gare Routière > workshop venue about 1,5 km). Keep in mind that Aix is a relatively small city and more or less everythig is within walking distance.

Walking from Gare Routière via "La Rotonde" to workshop venue: (keep to the left when departing the shuttle bus) > down Avenue de l'Europe > left into Avenue des Belges > cross Place du Général de Gaulle (La Rotonde / Tourist Office) > left into Avenue Napoléon Bonaparte > right into Cours Sextius > right into Avenue Jean Jaurès > left into Avenue Pasteur.
By bus from Gare Routière via "La Rotonde" to workshop venue: Monday-Saturday: line 20 or 21 from Avenue Victor Hugo (X on the map), 12min trip, every 20min, from 7:55 to 20:40; and at 8:40, 16:45, 17:45 and 18:45 from Gare Routière. Sunday: line 21 from avenue Victor Hugo, 6 trips between 10:10 and 18:10. (Check up-to-date timetable here).
Taxi: If you prefer going by taxt, there are two main taxi ranks in Aix-en-Provence, one at the left end of the Gare Routière, and another one at the northern side of the main roundabout "La Rotonde". Call the follwoing number or click here for taxi reservations: 0(033) 4 42 277111
